STREET CRITIQUE

This is a continuation of the introductory Street Photography class with Julia. It is meant to motivate you to shoot weekly with your comrades, or on your own in preparation of a critique of the work. Every three weeks, the group will meet in DTLA for a critique and a lecture prepared by Julia to help guide you in your quest to become an accomplished street photographer. You will also be given specific assignments between critiques.

This class can be repeated numerous times, as Julia changes the lectures with each new season. A survey will be taken at the beginning of the class to see which of many topics she offers will best suit your needs.

crash flash class

In these one and tw0-day workshops, participants will learn how to use their flash on camera and off, in both manual and TTL modes. You will learn how to use your flash as (1) “the main source of light” when in low-light sitatuations, and (2) as a “fill light.” Once the technical aspect is mastered, we move on to improving the quality of light, first with flash diffusers, then by getting the flash off the camera onto a stand with an umbrella. To enable off-camera flash use, participants will need a flash transmitter. A full itinerary will be sent to the participants upon enrollment.5

THE DOCUMENTARY PROJECT

This is a six-month class, that meets in person once a month.

This is a six-month class that meets once a month for critique and lecture. Each person will take on a documentary project within Los Angeles. It can be a project — on and off the job — about one of the “characters” who dress up for tourists on Hollywood Blvd. Or you could choose to tell the story of someone living out of their car, while going to college at the same time. Another idea might be to document life in a hair salon or barber shop along Cesar E. Chavez Ave. in Boyle Heights. The point here is that you can choose any type of documentary project that shows the viewers an inside look at a specific community or an interesting person in Los Angeles.

NEXT CLASS: BEGINS APRIL 26, 2025

Tuition: $600

Maximum Enrollment: 6 Students

(SIX THREE-HOUR SESSIONS, PLUS INDIVIDUAL ZOOM TIME WITH JULIA IN BETWEEN CLASSES)
