Join us from 7:30-9:00 pm, Thursday, June 6th as we celebrate the first chapter of a new monthly event,  “The Los Angeles Times Photographer Series.” Our first evening welcomes Los Angeles Times photojournalist Michael Robinson Chávez:

Michael Robinson Chávez has been a photographer at The Los Angeles Times since 2007. Prior to that, he worked for The Washington Post, The Boston Globe and the Associated Press. He has covered wide-ranging international assignments in over 50 countries including: the Congolese Civil War, the quakes and tsunamis in Indonesia and Chile, the Egyptian revolution, life in India and Brazil’s slums, gold mining in Peru, the 2006 Hezbollah/Israeli war, the Georgian/Russian war in 2008, the conflict in Israel/Palestine and the US led invasion and occupation of Iraq.

Michael was awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for Photojournalism in 2012 and was named second place Photographer of the Year by Pictures of the Year International in 2010. He also won an Award of Excellence in the same contest and category in 2008. In 2008 Michael won the Scripps Howard National Award for Photojournalism and has twice been named  Photographer of the Year by The White House News Photographers’ Association. He has also received awards from the National Press Photographers Association, the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar and the Society of Newspaper Design.

His work has been exhibited widely, including the Visa Pour l’image festival in France, which showed his 10-year project on Peru and photos from the 2010 Chilean earthquake, as well as at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, Imagenes Havana in Cuba, Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Ana, California, Los Angeles County Museum of Art , and Ojo Ajeno in Lima, Peru. He had his photographs from the Lebanon/Israeli war of 2006 exhibited at the War Photo Ltd. Gallery in Dubrovnik and at the Museu Memorial de l’Exili in Spain. American Photography’s 25^th Anniversary book featured photographs from the Georgia/Russian war, which were also shown at the photo festival in Arles, France.

He has published a book of his photographs from Peru: “Awaiting the Rain.” In addition he teaches and lectures at workshops throughout the world including Mexico, Argentina, India, Thailand, Egypt, Peru, the United States and El Salvador.

Join us from 7:30-9:00 pm, Thursday, May 30th as we welcome fine art photographer Greg Miller. This marks Greg’s first visit to The Julia Dean Photo Workshops in what we hope will be many more to come. Please join us in celebrating Greg and his work!

Greg Miller (www.gregmiller.com) was born in Nashville, Tennessee in 1967. At the age of 19, he moved to New York to attend School of Visual Arts graduating with a BFA in Photography in 1990. Predominantly using an 8×10 view camera, his photography specializes in street photography, found moments and portraiture to capture human relationships and a sense of suspended reality. In 2008, he received a Photography Fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation and his photography has appeared in numerous publications including The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, TIME, People, Fortune and LIFE. Greg teaches photography at the International Center of Photography in New York.

Join us from 7:30-9:00 pm, Thursday, June 13th as photographer and storyteller Eddie Soloway returns to Julia Dean for “The Moment of Now, and Other Stories that Made a Difference”. In Eddie’s words, “Life is about gathering experiences. In early years, every day brings first time moments. The first time you saw a firefly, the first time you laughed so hard it hurt, the first time you shared a kiss. Photography, if we choose, can take us beyond a simple record, and into the realm of capturing the essence of a place, and the moment of now. Right now.”

Eddie Soloway’s photographs (www.eddiesoloway.com) are the expression of his passion and commitment to the natural world. His eye has developed during a lifetime of exploring the earth’s wild places. Former positions in educational workshop design, wilderness program development, and custom fine photographic printing have further honed his expertise. In 1998, Eddie was the first recipient of the Excellence in Photographic Teaching Award presented by the Santa Fe Center for Photography. Today he divides his time between making fine-art prints, teaching, speaking on creativity and the photographic life, and furthering photographic publishing projects. His first book, One Thousand Moons, was published in the summer of 2004, and his dvd, A Natural Eye: Big Sur was released in December, 2009. An impassioned teacher, Eddie brings experiences in nature, creativity, and photography to his workshops.
