The Los Angeles River Photo Adventure with Peter Bennett
The Los Angeles River runs over 50 miles through the heart of a metro area populated by 10 million people. Yet in a place where water is such a precious commodity, hardly any of its inhabitants know the river’s history, where it begins or ends, or its current function. In fact, the patchwork of governments and agencies that control the river make it almost impossible to access it without trespassing. No other American city has so completely turned its back on such a resource. Most see it as a hideous scar on the landscape, a polluted dystopian highway through the heart of urban darkness. Yet, it is also a rich cultural canvas of striking visuals and unlimited potentials.
Join photographer Peter Bennett (www.greenstockphotos.com) as he takes you on an intense 10-hour tour of the Los Angeles River, designed specifically for photographers. Peter’s intimate knowledge of the river and its history allows him to assist fellow photographers in finding unique and undiscovered places to shoot, all while providing technical help and great fellowship.
The adventure includes:
- Hands-on instruction and guidance
- A docent
- Access to all locations
- Bus transportation throughout the day
- Lunch at Casa La Golondrina in Chinatown
- Snacks & water
- Each participant will be entitled to receive one free 11×14 print, courtesy of A&I Photographic and Digital Services.

About Peter Bennett: Peter has been enjoying, exploring and photographing the LA river for many years. He has worked with FoLAR (Friends of the LA River) on numerous projects and in 2008 helped document George Wolfe’s 3 day Los Angeles River Expedition which was responsible for the US Army corps of Engineers reclassifying the river as a navigable waterway, making it eligible for protection under the clean water act. “The river is an ever changing landscape with so many different parts to it” says Peter. “To me the perfect photographic subject is one that is constantly evolving and transforming, and with the 20 year LA River Revitalization plan underway, there is no place in LA that is even close to undergoing the kind of transformation than the LA River is, it is a very exciting place to explore”. Peter’s 2011 photo essay on the LA River for Time Magazine can be seen here. http://tinyurl.com/25uebop

An Evening with Greg Gorman
Greg Gorman’s (www.gormanphotography.com) work documents that peculiar obsession of the 20th century celebrity. Each shot, a testament to the individual character, gives a picture of human nature in its infinite range. “For me a photograph is most successful when it doesn’t answer all the questions,” says Gorman,“ and it leaves something to be desired.” For over three decades, Greg Gorman has continued to master the art of photography. From personality portraits and advertising campaigns to magazine layouts and fine art work, Greg has developed and showcased a discriminating and unique style in his profession.

Join us on the streets of New York and learn how to shoot candidly, quickly, and with purpose. Julia’s street shooting workshops are set up in the same way with each destination workshop. Shooting time. Critiques. Slideshows of work by historic and contemporary street shooters. Lectures about shooting on the street and evenings with street shooters from the city that you are in.
The workshop begins Sunday, June 24th 6:00 pm for a cocktail party and orientation. We’ll meet and go over the week’s itinerary and the list of special guests who will be spending evenings with us.
Each day the lecture will take place between 10 am – 12 pm in a conference room at a designated hotel. Each evening, we will meet in that same conference room for critiques and special guest presentations. In between, you’ll be shooting specific assignments in specific locations, on the streets. On Friday evening, the workshop will end with a cocktail party and slideshow of the participants’ work.
Daily lectures will include information on:
~ the laws and ethics of shooting on the street
~ how to shot candidly

~ lens selection
~ zone focusing
~ the difference between seeing in black and white and seeing in color
