The famous underwater explorer Jacques Cousteau once said “In order to observe a fish, you most become one”. Observing is nice, but how about making a beautiful image of those unique creatures? This workshop is designed to learn the very basics of underwater photography. Learn how to make meaningful and fun images while snorkeling in the beautiful waters off La Jolla, California.

On Friday evening we’ll have a brief orientation in Oceanside, California, followed by a lecture on basic camera settings, rules of composition and creative use of flash on Saturday morning. In the afternoon we travel to La Jolla (approximately 30-45 minute drive) and hit the water for our first shoot. Next morning we are back in the water for more fun images and adventure. On Sunday afternoon we return to Oceanside and process our work for a group critique session. Perfect for the beginning or advanced level photographer, this workshop is also great for parents and their children (ages 8 and above) seeking to learn while having fun at the same time!.

Participants must know how to swim and snorkel. Snorkeling gear will not be provided although will be available for rent. A camera (SLR or Point and Shoot) equipped with waterproof housing is required. External flash unit is highly recommended. No disposable underwater cameras. A model(s) will be provided for either Saturday or Sunday. June temperatures in the waters off La Jolla are warm and average over 65 degrees.
