The Art of Polaroid Transfer and Pinhole Photography

© Julia Dean
This fun-filled workshop explores two different artistic methods of photography — Polaroid Transfer and Pinhole photography — neither requires any photographic experience. We begin with a demonstration using a 4x5 pinhole camera, essentially a square box with a hole that serves as the F/stop and lens. A small lever that covers the pinhole is moved back and forth to function as the shutter. These are the basics of the first camera made more than 165 years ago and today the Pinhole still creates stunningly beautiful images.
Following the Pinhole demonstration we will observe the Polaroid Transfer process,
a truly magical process creating a striking, impressionistic look.We will also learn to make Polaroid Emulsion Lifts, different from the Polaroid Transfer but equally beautiful. Students will then split into two groups: one will work with Pinhole cameras while the other will create Polaroid Transfers and Emulsion Lifts. Half-way through the groups will switch so that everyone receives hands-on experience with all of the creative processes.
Participants will use both color and black-and-white Polaroid film with Polaroid backs for instant results.
