The Fashion Editorial Assignment

For many photographers, shooting a fashion editorial assignment is a challenging yet richly rewarding experience. Intended for intermediate to advanced level photographers seeking to find direction shooting fashion editorial, this energetic, six-week workshop will teach participants the art and craft of shooting high-end fashion stories for magazines. Students will explore the essential ingredients that make a memorable fashion image such as how to create and direct the synergy of shoots, lighting techniques, and camera and lens selections. We will also discuss how to be your own art director, how to work with fashion editors, how to cast and work with models, and selecting stylists and hair/makeup artists. Shooting in the studio and on location, instructor Jason Christopher will help participants to interpret their assignments and translate them into images they can use. The overall objective is for participants to discover their own style, create a series of photos for their portfolios, and further their knowledge and preparedness for fashion magazine shoots.
First and last class sessions will be held at JDPW. All fashion shoots will be held at Bellevarado Studios (www.bellevaradostudios.com) located in Echo Park near downtown Los Angeles. Models and make-up artists will be provided. At the end of the course, there will be a discussion on the current nature of the fashion business with tips on how to market to magazines. Participants are expected to have basic photography and studio lighting knowledge.
Jason Christopher (www.jasonchristopher.com) is a commercial fashion photographer based in Los Angeles California. His work has been compared to the French painter Degas and the Italian master of artistry Leonardo Da Vinci for the way he uses clean, classic lines of the body resembling a piece of fine art.
