Photographing People in Their Environment
© Josh Sanseri
This two-day crash course in portrait photography builds the foundation for fresh approaches to photographing people on location. The weekend begins with a variety of basic lighting demonstrations in the studio. Topics for discussion include use of artificial and natural light, soft and hard light sources, available modifiers, and how to combine our many options to make beautiful light and fulfill our individual photographic vision. After lunch, the hands-on experience begins with participants photographing in and around the studio. At the end of the day we’ll critique the day’s work.
The second day of the workshop will begin with additional lighting demonstrations aimed specifically at photographing on location. After the demonstrations, participants will apply the newly learned techniques in making their own environmental portraits around Venice. At the end of the day, we’ll have our final critique discussing the strengths and weaknesses from each photographer’s shoot. Upon concluding the workshop, participants will have the technical skill and inspiration to approach photographing people with confidence.
