The Contemporary World of International Photojournalism

Ron Haviv

The workshop will explore the multi-faceted approaches to international photojournalism and help guide you on your own path. Students will learn what is required of a photojournalist, not just in the field but also when it comes to having work published and how to get your work out there. Developing a personal sensitivity and visual style will be emphasized and Haviv will encourage participants to work using their instinct rather than formula.

Combining portfolio reviews, assignments, editing sessions, and dialogue, Haviv will also share his own work and experience as a photojournalist. Portfolio reviews will guide each person's narrative direction and then be developed through assignments given during the workshop. Throughout the weekend, Ron will help you understand the reality of international journalism today and share his tips on what it takes to cover the world scene. You will leave with a clearer understanding of what it takes and be well along the way to defining your personal path forward.

Award-winning photojournalist Ron Haviv has produced some of the most important images of conflict and humanitarian crises that have made headlines from around the world since the end of the Cold War. Numerous museums and galleries have featured his work, including The Louvre, United Nations, and The Council on Foreign Relations. Co-founder of the photo agency VII, his work is published by magazines worldwide. He has published two critically acclaimed collections of his photography -- Blood and Honey: A Balkan War Journal, and Afghanistan: On the Road to Kabul. Haviv has been the central character in three films including National Geographic Explorer’s Freelance in a World of Risk that explores the hazards inherent in combat photography. In addition, Haviv regularly speaks about his work on television such as NBC Nightly News, The Charlie Rose Show, Good Morning America, ABC World News Tonight and CNN.
