The Fashion Editorial Assignment

For many photographers, shooting a fashion editorial assignment is a challenging yet richly rewarding experience. Intended for photographers seeking to find direction shooting fashion editorial, this creative, energetic workshop will teach participants the art and craft of shooting fashion stories for magazines. Students will explore the essential ingredients that make a memorable fashion shoot such as lighting techniques, concept, location, styling, hair and make-up, and choice of equipment, Emphasis will be placed on developing the photographer’s style and point-of-view. Shooting in the studio and on location, Andrew Southam will help participants discover their own style, create a series of photos for their portfolios, and ultimately further their knowledge and preparedness for fashion magazine shoots. Although the business aspects of fashion editorial will be briefly covered, the focus and direction of this workshop will revolve around producing memorable fashion imagery.
The first and last class sessions will be held at JDPW. All three studio shoots will be held at BelleVarado Studios (www.bellevaradostudios.com) located in Echo Park. One full day will be spent on location at a site to be determined. Models and a make-up artist will be provided. Participants are expected to have basic photography and studio lighting knowledge.
Andrew Southam (www.andrewsoutham.com) is an Australian fashion and portrait photographer and director. He has lived and worked in New York, London and Milan. He began his career doing photography for the Sydney Theatre Company and the Australian National Ballet. His work has been published in the Australian, English, Italian and American Vogue, as well as American and French Elle, and his portraits have been exhibited in the Australian National Portrait Gallery. On the upcoming workshop Andrew has said "I have never recovered from seeing photographs by Newton, Avedon, or Penn for the first time. I hope to impart something of that joy to anyone that who takes the class." Andrew currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife & son.
