Children and Pet Photography

The goal of this six-session class is to begin the journey of developing a personal style, while learning the craft of working with children and secondarily, animals. In addition to patience, the photographer/artist must learn to find the art, heart and soul of the subject. This is what sets a photographer’s work apart. Toward that goal we will study photographic influences, lighting, and the importance of wardrobe and location selection to create a fully integrated image. In addition, the business of children’s portraiture will be covered with discussions on pricing, working with clients, presentations, printing and the sale of prints.
Two class sessions will be hands-on. One shoot will take place on location with a child model(s) using available light and reflectors. The other shoot will take place inside at the JDPW studio where working with animals and children will be covered using a basic studio lighting set up.

Janet Baker-Richardson (www.jbrphoto.com) worked for many years as a producer of television commercials. After the birth of her child, she left the crazy world of travel and long hours to become a portrait photographer. During this time, Janet had the opportunity to return to school and work along side some of the world’s best portrait photographers. She has won numerous awards for her work including top honors in her categories at the 2005 and 2006 Wedding and Portrait Photographers International print competitions. Her work has appeared in Rangefinder Magazine and the book Best of Children’s Portraiture, published by Amherst Media. Janet currently lives in Los Angeles, California, with her family.
